Avantex: The Future of Living Materials

Living Colour by Laura Luchtman and Ilfa Siebenhaar

By Daniëlle Bruggeman

On February 12, the ArtEZ Centre of Expertise Future Makers engaged in an open conversation about the possibilities offered by bio-materials in the field of textiles at Avantex in Paris.

During this open conversation, scientists and designers involved in research on 'The Future of Living Materials' discussed the challenges of making a real impact on the production and use of textiles and clothing. This highlighted the importance of bringing together design, business and science to contribute to a sustainable fashion and textile industry.

From an interdisciplinary research approach, the ArtEZ Centre of Expertise Future Makers aims to develop sustainable value chains in fashion and design. The project 'The Future of Living Materials' is an excellent example in which scientists from different disciplines (plant sciences, consumer behaviour, circular business models, cultural studies) collaborate with product and fashion designers who are exploring the possibilities of biomaterials like algae and mycelium.
